The Polk County Historical Society announces the return of the annual Blossom Drive Open House at the Harrison and Emily Brunk farm on Saturday, April 12th from 10AM- 3PM. The address is 5705 Salem Dallas Highway (22West). The home will be the first stop on the “Poker Run” held by the Salem area auto club, the GM Haulers.
Historically the Eola hills were covered with blooming cherry trees each Spring. The Historical Society recently received photographs which showcase the cherry-blossomed hills and also the Franklin-Dibble Tulip fields. Tulips, as well as cherry blossoms, were featured in the original blossom drives from 1914-1945. We thank the Franklin Family for these wonderful photographs!
The Brunk House is owned and operated by the Polk County Historical Society and contains many original Brunk items, some coming over the Oregon Trail in the family’s wagons in 1849. The Brunks settled first in the Baskett Slough area, then moved to higher ground at the current location of Eola in order to farm the land. With 12 children, they prospered through three generations, amassing 1100 acres. The Classic Revival Home was completed in 1861, and was restored in the 1980s following its bequeath to the Historical Society by Earl Brunk. It is to be kept as an example of an early Polk County farm.
When you visit Brunk House on April 12th during the open house, you will experience Spring on a Pioneer farm from another century, with many signs of your grandparents’ or great-grandparents’ home life: fruit trees, farm out-buildings, vegetable gardens, grape arbors and more. You will be able to tour the home for a donation and enjoy homemade desserts in the large kitchen around a table where 14 family members regularly gathered.
Enjoy a Spring Drive and come to the Harrison and Emily Brunk farm home at 5705 Salem Dallas Highway (22W) from 10AM-2PM on Saturday, April 12, 2014. The closest cross street is Oak Grove Road and the house is east of Rest Lawn Cemetery.
